Kudos
When I was a child, I always wondered what this iron metal-like thing which is seen on the shoulder was for.
Was it just used for costumes or did it mean something?
But Finally, i found the answer.
It was used to protect the neck from a sword. Hence, Therefore, it was placed on the left or right shoulder, or both shoulders, to avoid beheading.
I never thought that there was so much research done in 1988 B R Chopra's Mahabharata TV serial, Kudos to the team!
Knife or Death
Murari Gupta analyzed the multiple incarnations
of the Lord and came to the conclusion that in each one of the Lord’s appearances, before himself leaving, he arranged for his associates to leave also.
Thus, Ramachandra destroyed Ravana to save Sita, but then he abandoned her. Krishna arranged for the destruction of the Yadus. Thus, Mahaprabhu too would inevitably be disappearing at a certain moment. He thought that it would be better for him to depart before that day arrived, for it would be too painful for him. For this reason, Murari purchased a sharp knife and kept it hidden in his home. The Lord knew of his intention and immediately came to his house and asked Murari to hand over the knife. The above mentioned lilas are found described in the Bhakti-ratnakara’s twelfth wave.
